News from the front

Not really from the front at all, but I just wanted to say that.

Webcomic Community folk are all about the latest issue going down regarding a certain independent documentary and a certain someone’s mockery of said film. I’d link either of them, but that’s really just fanning the flames I feel. But I’ll say that if you really have no clue what I’m addressing, and want to know, you can shoot me an e-mail and I’ll fill you in.

My whole position is the same position I try to uphold: Whether you’re an artist or a business person, a genius or a hack, a hailer or a naysayer, we need it all. In my eyes, things grow as they experience all things. And we need all things for our hobby to grow. We need the artists breaking the mold, we need the revolutionary thinkers, we need the harsh critics, we need the business-minded creators, we need the elitists, and we need the fans. We need everything and the changes they all can provide. Or else the whole webcomic thing just won’t be everything it can be.

Anyway, my WCCA coverage is still coming, but in the meantime I wanted to address a few points in the Criticism community.

Love him or hate him, Will G had a definite and notorious impact on the criticism community, despite not even technically being a critic most the time. It seems though, that he has officially stepped down from the criticism podium, and he even took down the blog as a whole. I’m bummed, as I had a lot of fun arguing with him through dozens of fiery e-mails and comments. That’ll probably still go on, though… I doubt Will can keep silent forever (Not to mention how I’m referring to him in the third person when I know damned well he reads this). But Delineated Life is done, at least until he makes his triumphant(ish) return. I’ll say I like what direction he’s taking, as you can see on his site. “I’m going to try and show and not tell…” Funny, I was going to suggest the very thing to him.

Occultatio’s got a little challenge going on. He says he’ll announce the answer/winner tonight. Tonight, meaning there’s still some time left. Head on over and try to figure out his baffling puzzle. He told me what the solution was, but I had to render myself ineligible to win. And the prize? The prize is very good.

I recently uncovered another site in the critic game. Go check out Tangents, the alarmingly upbeat webcomic review blog. Also added to the list over there at the right.

EDIT: Xavier Xerxes asked me to put Comixpedia on the list also. Who can say no to Xavier Xerxes?

That about covers it. If I don’t get a chance to post tomorrow, that’s because I’m at the Washington Webcartoonist Meet. Which, as a reminder, in on June 7th at 8:00 PM at the Borders Books & Music on 11054 Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA.

Hope to see you there. I’ll be the large loud fellow with the Applegeeks Power Bandana.

Well, you know… Being absolutely right in everything I say is exhausting. Now I know how Jesus felt. :P

Sure, Will. Whatever lets you sleep at night.

Well, it’s the smug air of wisdom that helps me sleep at night. It’s like the softest pillow made from the softest geese ever.
