Laughter Ensues

(From Something Positive, by Randy K. Milholland)
Just a quick snark while I’m thinking of it. Every once in a while we get a chance to see Randy’s art skills at their best. Previously, I think they were best exemplified in his New Gold Dream strips. They were exceptionally well drawn compared to the average S*P strip. During Q&A week we got some good ones, as well.
Yesterday was one of those days, as shown in the strip above. We see Davan laughing. Laughing in such a way that it is either giving him great joy or great pain, we really can’t tell. But he looks like he’s laughing. Belly laughing. And the buildup to the laughter, his failed attempt to hold it in, also great.
I just wanted to point out that today’s strips struck me as an example of Randy’s best, visually.
So yeah.

I dunno. The laughing seems more distrubing to me than anything. Davan doesn’t laugh. It’s… weird. And even though there is supposed to be a lot of movement, it looks kinda stiff.

I agree with the stiffness, but I think it only feels unnatural because we’re so used to moody-emo Davan. I’m curious to see how this twist turns out, but I think it’s a daring twist Randy’s trying, and I think it might pay off.
And we still love your comic Phil… Just in a sloppy seconds kind of way.

I liked how the laughing _looked_, but I hearily agree with Starline in that it was CREEPY: I think this is the very first time we’ve ever seen Davan laugh. It’s eerie, and gives me a little shiver of “WTF yikes!” or some such. Milholland, I am certain, knew that positively, and thus made such a visual point of it. Great comic.
I would comment more and with greater linguistic skill, but my brain is melting out my ears from being so tired, and yeah.
